Old Bagdad Cemetery

A short drive away from where we live is where you’ll find old Bagdad Cemetery — part of Williamson County here in Texas.

First opened in 1857, this is a place with notable things about it, modest as it may seem upon first glance. The colonel for whom a nearby school is named rests there along with a few other Texas Revolution and Civil War figures.

It’s also notable for being the cemetery where scenes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) were filmed.

I found myself there on Friday, November 8th, just a few days after Election Day. An old cemetery filled with forgotten graves and a quiet space to ponder our uncertain future seemed like the appropriate place to be. 2024.
